Ceiling Fixtures
Ceiling light fixtures, such as chandeliers, have the ability to convey instant elegance, character and sophistication in a room. Other ceiling fixtures are meant to shed light on the room without taking the spotlight themselves. Whether they're eye-catching or inconspicuous, ceiling lights will not clutter valuable floor space and are an ideal choice for dining rooms, kitchens, entry ways, living rooms, or bedrooms.
When you're choosing ceiling fixtures, it's important to keep in mind the size of the room that you will be lighting, where you'd like the ceiling fixtures to be placed, and the style of your home. After all, you wouldn't want to hang an ornate 55-light Olde World brass chandelier in the middle of a small, contemporary kitchen. As beautiful as the chandelier might be, it would look awkward and out of place in this type of setting. In this example, to avoid overpowering the small room and to compliment the room's existing décor, a contemporary light ceiling pendant, like those by George Kovacs, may be more appropriate. Pendant lights hang down from the ceiling similar to chandeliers, but they have a single light source and are often less intricate and more subtle than chandeliers.
Another important consideration when installing your new ceiling light fixtures is how high you will hang them. On average, you will want the hanging lights to be a minimum of seven feet above your floor. However, if you are placing a chandelier or pendant light over a table, also make sure that it is about thirty inches from the top of the table. You want to make sure that your head, and anyone else's head, will not bump into the light. For this reason, if you have very low ceilings, perhaps you may need to opt for a flush mounted fixture, rather than a pendant or chandelier. Flush mount ceiling fixtures will also help prevent your eyes from being drawn downward and visually shortening your ceiling even more.
